Although the name "Mustang" makes the car sound like a muscle car - and it evolved into one of the greatest American muscle machines of all - the original intent was to create a car that combined classic design and sporty styling. This idea came to fruition and the automotive public responded enthusiastically, making the Mustang one of the best selling new cars ever. But then Ford saw the merit in adding power and speed to the car's many attractive characteristics. The beefier Mustangs that ensued were given macho names like Cobra Jet Mach 1 and the Boss. The mightiest of all was the 1970 boss 420 Mustang, which today is one of the most coveted collector cars. Originally developed for the NASCAR racing circuit, the Boss 429 engine delivered an earth-pounding 375 horsepower at 5600 rpm. On the track the Boss won the Trans-Am championship, with Parnelli Jones taking five victories and, in all, the Ford team won half of the 1970 series races.
